Original surface patterns for brands that want artwork, not clip art.
Hand-painted illustrations turned into production-ready repeat patterns for fabric, apparel, stationery, and interiors. Every pattern starts as a painting made in my New York studio.
This is for you if:
If you're building a collection and need original prints that don't look like everyone else's, if you license surface patterns for apparel, homeware, or stationery and want something with a real artistic hand behind it, or if you want to develop the visual concept together from scratch because you don't have a brief yet, that's all exactly what I do here.
Case Study: Pastel Orchids
What a surface design project looks like.
Pastel Orchids started as a sheet of watercolor paper on my studio table. I painted orchids, dragonflies, tiny beetles, tendrils of green. The kind of botanical detail that takes time to get right.
From that painting I built two pattern versions: a scattered placement with breathing room between each motif, and a tight allover repeat for fabric that needs more density. Two colorways — cream ground for something light and feminine, periwinkle blue for something with more presence.
The same painting became a button-down shirt, a billowy blouse, a printed textile. That's what surface design does: one original artwork, infinite applications.
This is what I can do for your brand.
What I deliver:
Allover repeat patterns
Full rapport files ready for production: fabric, wallpaper, paper goods, or any repeating surface. Delivered in agreed formats at print resolution.
Placed / localized prints
Single motifs or compositions designed for a specific placement on a garment or product: chest print, back graphic, sleeve detail.
Multiple colorways
Each pattern can be developed in additional colorways beyond the original. Standard delivery includes one colorway; additional colorways quoted separately.
Creative direction
I can work from your existing brief and moodboard, or develop the visual concept with you from scratch. Both are welcome.
What you receive
Every project is delivered with production-ready files in agreed formats — PNG, TIFF, or PDF at the resolution your printer or manufacturer requires. The rapport is technically clean and ready to submit directly to your production partner. No extra prep work needed on your end.
Copyright remains with Mali Creative Studio. Licensing terms — exclusivity, territory, duration — are agreed in writing before files are released.
Investment
Surface design projects are priced based on scope: number of patterns, colorways, and whether the concept is developed from scratch or executed from an existing brief.
Pattern licensing starts at $850 for non-exclusive use. Custom design commissions start at $1,500 per original pattern, plus licensing fee.
If you're not sure what you need, the best first step is a short conversation about your project.
